Development History

There has been steady and strategic development at Nanny Cay over the last 5 decades as it has adapted to an increasing market demand for high quality marina facilities, playing a key role in the BVI becoming a world leading sailing destination.

In this time, the marina has grown from uninhabitable scrub land in the 1970s to one of the largest and most highly respected facilities in the Caribbean.

The initial stages of the development saw dredging works undertaken to deepen the original harbour on the site, to form 8 fixed docks.

Since the current custodians of the marina took ownership in the year 2000, the marina has gone through a steady transformation, including;

2000 – 2002

The installation of a new armour wall breakwater at the mouth to the South end of the Inner Marina. A new travel lift to the North West mouth of the marina, allowing greater access and mobility to the boatyard and dry-dock.

2002 – 2004

The creation of the new beach to the South of the Marina

2004 – 2009

The formation of new groins to the West of Nanny Cay to stabilise land and increase protection from tidal erosion.

Construction of a new flushing channel from the inner marina to the open sea to the East of the Marina.

Phase 1 of the new 32-unit high end waterfront Townhouse development.

2009 – 2014

Phase 2 of the new 32-unit high end waterfront Townhouse development.

Land reclamation to form the new boat storage facilities to the North East of the marina

2014 – 2017

The construction of a new Peninsula to the West of Nanny Cay to form the Outer Marina. Formation of additional land to the South East corner of the South end of the Marina.

2018 – 2021

Major reconstruction to the entire Marina facilities following Hurricane Irma.

Rerouting of the access road to the site and completion of the Peninsula and new Outer Marina.
